Flagg Mountain C.C.C. Tower

Flagg Mountain Tower, one of only two in the state of Alabama, was to be the centerpiece of a new state park atop the mountain. The tower, completed in the mid-1930’s, is a tribute to the craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The tower and several log cabins were completed but abandoned at the outset of World War II. The state then made the forest surrounding the mountain into a state forest, with the tower serving as a fire tower.

After years of neglect and deterioration, volunteers from the area formed a group called Coosa County Conservation Corportation (CCCC) and leased the property from the government, including the tower and cabins. Since 1999, the CCCC has restored the tower to a state where it is actually usable again.

More information about Flagg Mountain and the Fire Tower can be found on pages 136-140, in the book “Hiking Alabama”, written by Joe Cuhaj.
